Thing 6. Pinterest

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that allows users to bookmark images and video footage from the internet. It is also a tool for sharing and discovery; people can browse boards curated by others and “like” or repin images they find interesting.

Library Services like Moonee Valley are using Pinterest to share themed reading lists, display images from their local history collection, promote new acquisitions and provide information about their ereaders. Take a look at their boards by clicking on the screenshot below.

ABOUT  PINTEREST

What Is A Pin?

A pin is a picture or video that someone has added to Pinterest. Every pin is linked to the original site from which it was found. So when you click on a pin you are re-directed to the original source.

What Is A Board?

A board is just like a bulletin board or folder. It is a place to store and organise all of your pins. When you join Pinterest, five boards are automatically created for you :

  • Products I Love
  • Favorite Places & Spaces
  • Books Worth Reading
  • My Style
  • For The Home

These boards can be renamed by clicking the edit button below each board.

Click on the boards below to see how Yarra Plenty, the Scribner, and LAPL libraries are using Pinterest. There are lots more to discover!

Whenever you like something that someone has shared in Pinterest and you want to save it to one of your Boards, simply hover your mouse over the image and click the “Repin” button.

A new box will open displaying the image. Select which Board you’d like to save it to, add a description (or leave as is), and click “Pin It.”

The pin will also be shared with your followers and it will retain the link, so if anyone clicks it they will be taken to the original site too.

HOW DO I ADD A PIN?

First, you will need to install the “Pin It” button to your internet browser toolbar.

  • Go to your toolbar. Select ViewToolbars > Favourites Bar.
  • Install the “Pin It” button by following the instructions in the blue box found on the Pinterest Help page here.

Once installed, it should appear in your Favorites Toolbar as below.
