WELCOME

Welcome to the Yarra Libraries Social Media Update Course.

The following activities are designed to re-introduce you to some of the basics of Web 2.0. Each week you will be encouraged to explore the social media landscape and consider the application of these tools wthin a library environment.

Much like the original 23 Things: Learning Web 2.0  completed a few years ago, this is a self-directed course designed to take place over a 12 week period – It will begin on November 5th 2012 and conclude early 2013.

We recommend pairing up with a colleague but if you feel confident working through the activities independently, please feel free to do so. Your Team Leader will talk to you about who to pair up with so that you can work through the activities together.

Keeping up with technology is a professional responsibility; it is important to know what’s out there, how to use it and where it’s applicable. These activities will work towards your professional development while developing your 2.0 skills.

We will not only revisit blogging, twitter and RSS feeds but also introduce you to QR codes, pinterest, prezi and more. You will be joining a number of new networks so please remember to write down all your login details. Perhaps use a notebook for this program to list all your usernames and passwords.

As a brief introduction, watch the video below. It was produced by Box Hill Tafe and provides a brief overview of the social media landscape as of December 2011. If you’re interested in current statistics, check out Social Media News for Australian figures and Digital Marketing Ramblings for international stats.
