Thing 2. Yammer

Yammer has been described as Facebook for Business. Basically, it’s a social network “used for private communication within organisations or between organisational members and pre-designated groups”. Source: Wikipedia . As an introduction to Yammer, watch this brief video.

The City of Yarra launched Yammer about a year ago. It is being used by Council staff to share work-related news and information. We will be inviting everyone to join the Yarra Libraries group – please accept the invitation when you get it.

Just remember whatever you post to Yammer will be visible to the whole group.

ACTIVITY

  1. Join Yammer and complete the registration.
  2. Click on “Browse Groups” to see what other groups exist in Council.
  3. Join the Yarra Libraries group and post something book related – it can be as simple as sharing a book that you are currently reading, posting a link to a book review, or uploading a useful video.
  4. Make Yammer part of your daily routine – it will generate a more vibrant sense of community if we all contribute. What a great way to stay in touch with what’s happening with your colleagues at other branches.
  5. Write a blog entry about Yammer – perhaps comment on how it cmpares to Facebook.
  6. Don’t forget to read and comment on your colleague’s blog posts.

As we are in the early stages of our Social Media Update Course, it would be a good idea to use Yammer as a way to ask questions, share social media news and monitor what insights others may have about the activities.
